Is dental treatment abroad safe?
An honest answer.
Done properly, yes. Dental treatment in Romania is carried out by clinicians registered with the Romanian College of Dental Surgeons, in clinics working to EU medical device rules. Done casually, it can go badly wrong. The difference is rarely the country and almost always the preparation: what is agreed in writing before you travel and what happens if you need help later. This page covers both, plainly.
A modern European clinic,
run by specialists.
This is not one dentist doing a little of everything, and it is a long way from the improvised treatment some people picture when they hear "abroad". Our partner clinic is an established, multidisciplinary practice in Bucharest where different specialists handle their own areas of your treatment. Romania is a European Union member state, so the clinic works under the same European standards and regulation as a practice in the UK or Germany.
A team of specialists
Your treatment is shared across a team rather than handled by one generalist. The dentist who places an implant is not the same one who designs and fits your crowns. Orthodontics is handled in-house by the clinic's own team. The clinic's specialists train and lecture internationally, and each stage of your treatment is done by someone who does that particular work day in, day out.
Regulated to EU standards
The clinicians are registered with the Romanian College of Dental Surgeons and the practice is authorised by the Romanian health authority. Every implant and material is CE-marked under EU Medical Device Regulation 2017/745, the same framework used across the European Union.
Sterile, every time
Instruments are sterilised between patients and single-use items are used where the procedure calls for it, under the infection-control standards that apply across the EU. Every implant case is planned first on CBCT 3D imaging, so nothing is guessed in the chair.
Materials you would recognise
The implant systems are Straumann and MegaGen and the crownwork is full ceramic, all CE-marked. These are the same materials a good UK private practice uses, not cheaper unbranded substitutes.
What actually goes wrong,
and what removes each risk.
The horror stories behind "dental work abroad gone wrong" almost always trace back to one of five avoidable mistakes. Here is each one, next to the control we put around it.
Choosing on price alone
The cheapest quote often omits work that gets added later. Our control: a fixed, itemised plan prepared with our partner clinic arrives in writing before you commit to anything, and nothing is charged until you decide.
Clinics you cannot verify
Anyone can build a glossy website. Our control: we work with one partner clinic in Bucharest, registered with the Romanian College of Dental Surgeons and working to EU MDR 2017/745 with CE-marked materials, plus CBCT imaging, sterile protocols and an English-speaking team.
Implants no UK dentist can service
Obscure implant systems leave you stranded at home. Our control: the clinic places Straumann and MegaGen, systems UK dentists can maintain with standard parts, and you take home an implant passport recording exactly what was fitted.
Flying home with nothing in writing
If it is not written down, it does not exist. Our control: you travel home with your itemised plan, your implant passport and your guarantee terms as documents, so any dentist can see what was done and by whom.
Being passed between people
Details get lost in handovers. Our control: one dedicated coordinator handles your quote, plan and appointments online from first message to final check-up, so nothing falls between the gaps.
Your guarantee,
item by item.
Every guarantee is stated in your written plan before you commit, so you can read the exact terms before spending anything. In outline, this is what stands behind the work.
| What | What stands behind it | Serviceable at home? |
|---|---|---|
| Implant fixture | Straumann or MegaGen manufacturer warranty | Yes, standard parts UK dentists can obtain |
| Crowns & bridgework | Clinic guarantee of 5 to 10 years depending on the work | Yes, standard materials and records supplied |
| Your documentation | Itemised plan, implant passport and written guarantee terms | Travels home with you |
Exact durations and conditions depend on your treatment and are stated in your written plan. Read them before you decide; that is what they are for.
What happens if you need help
once you are home.
This is the question that matters most, so here is the honest version of how it works.
Message your coordinator
Describe the problem and send a photo or a recent X-ray if you have one. You keep the same online point of contact you had before treatment.
The treating clinician reviews it
Your records, materials and imaging are already on file, so the clinician who did the work assesses what is going on and responds with a plan.
One of three honest routes
Minor issues can be handled by UK dentists because the systems fitted are standard. Your written guarantee terms set out what the clinic puts right and who covers what. If an issue falls outside the guarantee, we say so plainly and help you weigh the options.
What the guarantee
does not cover.
No honest clinic guarantees a clinical outcome, and neither do we. Guarantees come with conditions, and you should read them before you commit rather than after.
Typically conditional on
Keeps cover valid- Attending the review appointments in your plan
- Following the aftercare guidance you are given
- Normal oral hygiene and check-ups at home
Typically outside any guarantee
Not covered- New problems unrelated to the treatment carried out
- Damage from accidents or trauma after treatment
- Changes made against clinical advice
Your written plan states the exact conditions for your case. If anything in it is unclear, ask us before you commit rather than after.
Is Romania safer than Turkey?
The safety question is really about the clinic rather than the country. Romania's structural advantages are EU membership, EU medical device rules and clinicians registered with the Romanian College of Dental Surgeons, with UK-serviceable implant systems fitted as standard. We compare the two honestly, including where Turkey is cheaper, in our dental implants guide.
Asked by cautious people.
Answered plainly.
Is dental treatment abroad safe?+
It is as safe as the clinic you choose. Treatment through our partner clinic in Bucharest is carried out by clinicians registered with the Romanian College of Dental Surgeons, using CE-marked materials under EU MDR 2017/745, with a fixed written plan agreed before you travel. The risk rises sharply when patients book on price alone with no plan in writing.
Will a UK dentist look after work done abroad?+
For maintenance, yes. The clinic fits Straumann and MegaGen systems, which UK dentists can service with standard parts, and your implant passport records exactly what was placed. UK dentists are used to maintaining work they did not place; what they need is documentation, which you take home.
Who pays if I need remedial work?+
It depends on what your written guarantee covers, and you read those terms before you commit. Your written guarantee terms set out what the clinic puts right and who covers what. Your plan states who covers what, and we recommend travel insurance with dental-complications cover for the trip itself. If something falls outside the guarantee, we tell you plainly rather than leaving you to find out.
What happens if an implant fails years later?+
The implant fixture carries the manufacturer's warranty, and because it is a Straumann or MegaGen system, UK dentists can assess and service it using your implant passport. Failures years after successful integration are uncommon and usually relate to gum health, which is why guarantees are typically conditional on normal check-ups.
Are Romanian dentists qualified?+
Romanian dentists qualify through EU-standard university training and must be registered with the Romanian College of Dental Surgeons (CMSR) to practise. The clinicians treating our patients work in English and plan implant cases on CBCT imaging, the same standard a good UK implant practice uses.
